Things to Do in Arnside & Morecambe Bay: A Local Guide

Tucked between the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales, Arnside and Morecambe Bay is one of England's most underrated coastal destinations. Whether you're a local looking for a new walk or a visitor planning a weekend away, here's our guide to making the most of this stunning corner of Cumbria.

Walk the Arnside Knott

Arnside Knott is a National Trust hill rising 159 metres above the bay, offering panoramic views across Morecambe Bay to the Lakeland fells. The circular walk from Arnside village takes around 1–1.5 hours and is suitable for most abilities. Keep an eye out for red squirrels — the Knott is one of their last strongholds in the north of England.

Explore the Limestone Pavements of Silverdale

Just a short drive from Arnside, the village of Silverdale sits within the Arnside & Silverdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). The limestone pavements at Eaves Wood are a rare and beautiful habitat, home to ancient yew trees and wildflowers. The RSPB Leighton Moss reserve is also nearby — a must for birdwatchers.

Walk Across Morecambe Bay (with the King's Guide)

The cross-bay walk from Arnside to Kents Bank is one of the most iconic walks in the north of England — but the sands are treacherous without a guide. The Kings's Guide to the Sands leads official crossings throughout the year. It's an unforgettable 8-mile experience across open sands, with the Lakeland fells as a backdrop.

Spot Wildlife on the Estuary

Morecambe Bay is one of the UK's most important estuaries for wading birds and wildfowl. At low tide, thousands of knot, dunlin, and oystercatcher feed on the mudflats. The tidal bore — a wave that rushes in across the bay — is also a spectacular sight on big tides.

Visit Arnside Village

Arnside itself is a charming Victorian seaside village with a promenade, a pier, and a handful of independent shops and cafés. The village is easily reached by train on the scenic Cumbrian Coast Line, making it a perfect day trip from Lancaster, Kendal, or Barrow.
