Puffin on wood - 18cm high
The Puffin spends its life at sea fishing for sand eels and is a wonderful acrobatic swimmer and diver. It comes ashore to breed in the spring on grass-topped cliffs, preferring old rabbit burrows. Its colorful bill fades later in the year after the breeding season. The new chicks “jump-fly” and scramble down by night from the cliffs on which they have been bred in a race to escape predators like herring gulls. Puffins face strong competition from trawlers for the sand eels which are their favorite food, but which are often sadly processed to become cat-food.
